Once you reach Rearguard’s Base, you will be tasked with talking to a soldier as part of the Ask the Soldiers about Zhiyuan objective under this quest. Once you talk to the lone Midnight Ranger standing on the left side of the camp, you will be tasked with using the sensor. Your sensor will be located in the utility menu. Press the assigned button for it (hold Tab key on PC) and hover your cursor on the sensor. 

Press again or unhold the utility wheel button to equip the sensor on your character. Activate it by pressing T or selecting it from the activity icons on the bottom right side of the screen. If done correctly, you will spot several holographic projections appear ahead of you. Follow the projections so that it will lead you to the Detection Beacon
