Your health bar is indicated by the gray status bar underneath your green HP bar. You can access it in the top left corner of the screen. You will lose health if you are ill or have suffered damage. Even if you are hungry or thirsty, the bars will deplete. The only way to raise and restore health is by crafting or scavenging for consumables. The earliest consumables are antibodies and cans. Antibodies will help you when ill, while cans can satisfy your thirst and hunger. Antibodies can be obtained after killing zombies, and cans can be found during scavenging.
Later on, you can craft bandages by collecting plant fiber from flax plants. Also, during the scavenging process, you can find fruits and meat to cook to satiate your hunger, keeping the health bar full. As you increase your character level, you can unlock more crafting recipes to help you.
