At the end of Silent Hill 2 Remake, James pays a visit to a pretty creepy and frightening jail named Toluca. One of the hardest puzzles is the game. After you find all the weights for the scales, a gallow will appear. On the gallows are pieces of poems that you need to match. This guide will help you with this puzzle and the different endings that you might get after you complete it.

How to Start the Gallows Puzzle

After you figure out the combined weight of all the things in Toluca Prison, you’ll see gallows appear behind the scales in the prison yard. To activate the gallows, you need to put the weights on the scales in a way that makes the dial point straight up, toward the sword. You’ll find puzzles with weights and a hangman’s noose in the prison yard on the first floor. These scales can help you open four different doors on the first floor of the prison. But you’ll need to find more weights to do it.

How to Find the Weights

  1. Get the Heaviest Weight: Go to the chapel near the Armory. Take the Heaviest Weight from the altar.
  2. Open the Headless Serpent door: Put the Heaviest Weight on the right side and the small weight on the left side of the scales.
  3. Get the Medium Weight: Go through Death Row, overload the generator, and enter the room with the electric chair. Take the Medium Weight.
  4. Open the Hornless Ox door: Put the Heaviest Weight and the small weight on the left side and the Medium Weight on the right side.
  5. Get the Heavy Weight: Go through the Hornless Ox door, explore the second floor, and enter the Showers. Take the Heavy Weight from the back of the shower room (be prepared for a fight).
  6. Open the Boar door: Put the smallest weight on the left side and the other three weights on the right side.
  7. Get the Light Weight: Go through the Boar door, enter the Warden’s Office, and type “SICK” on the typewriter. Take the Light Weight from the drawer.
  8. Open the Wingless Dove door: Put all weights except the medium one on the left side and the medium weight on the right side.
  9. Get the Lightest Weight: Go through the Wingless Dove door, explore the basement, and enter the cell with spikes. Take the Lightest Weight from the ground.

How to Solve the Scales Puzzle

To solve the final puzzle with the scales, you need to make them perfectly balanced so the pointer points to the sword symbol in the middle. The problem is, they’re a bit off-balance to start. To fix this, put the Heaviest Weight, the medium weight, and the lightest Weight on the right side. Put the heavy weight, the lighter Weight, and the small weight (the one that was already there) on the left side. This should balance the scales perfectly and make the statue of Justice give you the Executioner’s Lever.

How to Solve the Gallows Puzzle

Now you can go to the gallows. Climb the stairs and pull the Executioner lever. This will let you read six poems written by the criminals who are hanging there. You have to match the beginning of each poem with the right ending.

After reading all the poems, you have to decide which criminal was actually innocent. The answer is the one who killed their mother to stop her from abusing him. This is the poem labeled Poem V. If you choose the wrong poem, you’ll fall into a dangerous area filled with enemies. You’ll have to fight your way out and climb back up to the gallows.
