There are more challenging boss encounters in Shadow of the Erdtree. While some of them are optional, you do have others that you cannot avoid. To find Putrescent Knight, you need to make your way deep within Stone Coffin Fissure. This location is close to the Fissure Cross site of grace, and to get here you need to travel from Cerulean Coast and head south. You can find The Fissure region down in the southernmost tip of the Land of Shadows map. Once you reach Cerulean Coast, keep heading south till you reach an area with ruins and large gravestones as shown in the pictures below
There is a giant pit that you need to fall through. Be careful while dropping down as there are enemies disguised as rocks here. Keep to the east side while dropping down and you will find The Fissure site of grace. East of here you will find a cave entrance. Turn right from the entrance and travel south.
You will have to jump across the platforms till you can find some footholds that will help you jump down. Follow the stream and you will find Miquella’s golden cross and Fissure Cross site of grace
From there, keep heading north through the ruins and you will come across the Fissure Waypoint site of grace. From there, travel northeast to east and follow the path into a cave. Keep to the east side and keep going east while jumping across gaps.
You will soon reach the ruins and a staircase leading south. Walk to the end of the staircase and jump off the ledge into the abyss to reach the lair of Putrescent Knight.
