Before you start scouting, you need mercs with high wisdom. They can help you gather information quickly. After that, open the Strategic map and select the Operations tab. There is a tab for Scout Area, and if you click on it you can pick any merc to dispatch. You can send up to two mercs, so choose those with high wisdom. Now all that is left is to send them away and wait for them to return. The most appropriate time to assign mercs to Scout is when you have no ongoing missions and to fill the time for the other mercs to heal.
Once they return with the necessary information, you can now visit the location and click on O for an overview. This will give you a birds-eye view of the map, and you will also notice certain areas are marked. You will get an area if it has landmines, explosives, or other traps. If you have Livewire on your team, she can further inform you about enemy locations, making navigation easier.
