To start playing multiplayer, you need to do the following

Make sure that you and your friends are playing in the same server in either PvP or PvE
You cannot change servers after you load in, so you need to create a new character in your preferred server
If you are already in the same server but can’t find each other, then you should check if you are in the same world
To do that by checking your current world on the top right corner of the screen
To change worlds, use the Teleportation Tower in any nearby settlement to change to the world your friends are at
You and your friends should complete the tutorial to unlock the Social option in the menu
From here, you can add friends to your Warband or Hive
You can either create a Hive of 3 players, or a Warband with several Hives
Type in the username of the player you wish to add that is in your world and server. You can type in the name under the Social menu
Make sure that the characters match that of the friend’s username to avoid any errors and adding the wrong person
Whenever your friends are online, they can see your invite and they can join you
