As you recruit more refugees into your village, you have to meet their basic needs. Once those are met, you might find that they are still unhappy if you check the Dynasty tab. If your population is unhappy, then you need to change the happiness meter. To do that, head over to the Dynasty tab and check out all the needs and requirements. Under each of them, you will find two faces of different colors and a slider between them. If the slider is pointed towards the orange face, then you have to move them over to the green face. You can do that by clicking on the green face to move the slider.

Once you have done that, you will find that the amount of goods that your villagers require has increased. Since you moved the slider, it increases the demand. This in turn will make them happy, as more than their basic needs are being met. Of course, you now have to keep up with the growing demands. Once all that is met, you can improve your villagers efficiency while performing tasks.
