Hardwood can be acquired by chopping down trees. Early in the game you will learn how to craft a stone axe. You can then use it to chop down trees within your vicinity. But just chopping a tree will only give you resin, branches, and bark. To get Hardwood, you need to cut down the tree entirely. But not all trees will give hardwood. If you are very early in the game, you would probably receive Logs instead of Hardwood. That is because the Stone Axe is only suited to chop down trees with thinner barks
