Charcoal is one of those early-game resources in Windrose that you’ll end up using a lot, especially when you start smelting ores and crafting better gear. It’s not hard to get once you understand the process. You’ll mainly be turning Hardwood into Charcoal using a simple setup, and along the way, you’ll also get useful byproducts like Ash. In this guide, we will walk you through how to make Charcoal and the easiest ways to get Hardwood.
How To Get Charcoal

Another important material that you would use in your furnace for smelting ores is Charcoal. To create Charcoal, you can use the Charcoal Kiln. All you have to do is put 1 Hardwood in the Charcoal Kiln and wait for around 45 seconds before getting 2 Charcoal, along with a small amount of Ash.
This is beneficial because not only is Ash useless in the game, but you can also craft more items from Ash, including gunpowder. This process is quite straightforward; thus, if you have time and enough Hardwood, it’s a good idea to set up a Charcoal Kiln to make some Charcoal.
How To Get Hardwood

After progressing through the early quests and defeating the first boss, Thomas Richards, the game will naturally guide you toward the Foothills biome.
When you get there, simply walk around until you find a forest where the trees have a slightly different appearance. These are the trees you will be cutting down for Hardwood. Cut them down in the usual way, and besides Hardwood, you will receive a bit of Tree Bark as well.
Alternatively, if you prefer not to collect the material on your own, you can simply buy it from the Handyman Trader. So whenever you’re running low, you can simply purchase what you need instead of going out to gather it.
