You can start building structures to help you farm crude oil and mixed fuel after you reach the desert region. Over here, you can find oil fields with oil extractors out in the open. You can find plenty of these structures around Red Sands, so just claim one of them as your own. Next, you need to unlock a Water Pump, an Oil Refiner, and a Generator. You can find all these recipes in the Memetics menu, under the Logistics and Infrastructure menus.
Next, place all the structures around your new base in the oil field. Place the water pumps on the ground and not on any water body nearby. Connect the water pump to the generator to get Barrel Crude Oil. Build and connect the refiner to the generator. Take the Barrel Crude Oil to the refiner to get Portable Mixed Fuel. You can now carry fuel on you while you travel around the area with a vehicle.
