Knifey has some choice words while talking about its former owner, Gene, and if you are in the vicinity where Gene is, Knifey will make a compelling argument on why you should stab him. Knifey will start getting more candid after you have completed the first bounty hunt mission and have successfully defeated 9-Torg. After you head home, Knifey will suggest that you stab Gene.
