The only way you can trigger the supply beacon to send in a supply drop pod is to wait around. You will get an announcement of an incoming supply pod drop in your nearest vicinity. Once you hear the announcement, you will also get a notification to start clearing the area. For this, check your mini map to figure out where the supply pod will drop. Go straight there and you will spot a yellow circle on the ground. If there are any debris like rocks in the area, you need to get rid of them by using your pickaxe. If the area is cleared, the circle will turn from yellow to blue. Now all you have to do is stand within the circle and wait for the pod to drop.
Using the supply pod to defeat tough enemies like Elites is another use for them. To do this you need to first clear the landing area before the Elite or Dread appears. Then lure the enemy within the drop radius and wait for the supply pod to drop and destroy the enemy
