Among the latest additions to ARK: Survival Ascended, the Umbra is perhaps one of the best creatures. Its speed, attack power, and special taming games make it quite unique on the island. While the taming process may seem confusing at first, it’s actually quite simple once you understand how each step works. This guide will walk you through the process of finding the creature and taming it.
How to Tame an Umbra

You need to go to the Ragnarok map to catch this creature since it was introduced on this map first. Before going out to look for an Umbra, you need to ensure that you have the following things with you:
- Primitive Drake Claw
- Exceptional Kibble or Raw Mutton (both are equally good)
- Primitive Umbra Saddle
- Cactus Broth (highly recommended)
- Bug repellent (recommended)
- A couple of parachutes
- Grappling Hook in case of emergency
These creatures do not spawn in groups and are mostly spotted in mountain regions rather than beachside or low level places. It should be noted here that Umbra is only available during nighttime. Wait for the Umbra to land before attempting to grapple onto it. Trying to start the tame while it is actively flying is much more difficult.
When you find an Umbra, you need to eat your Cactus Broth and apply bug repellent before trying to tame it. After using Cactus Broth and Bug Repellent, sneak up on the Umbra from behind or slightly from the side before using the Primitive Drake Claw to begin the taming process. With the help of Primitive Drake Claw, you should start taming the creature. Keep in mind that the Umbra can be a little buggy. Sometimes it refuses to land or doesn’t react properly even when you hit it.
Complete the Memory Mini-Game

Once you have completed the taming process, you will begin the first mini game. In this game, the Umbra will press certain buttons in sequence. You should pay attention and do the same thing. High-level Umbra will press more buttons, making it more difficult to remember the sequence. For low-level creatures, you will have very short sequences that are easy to learn for your first taming experience. You should not press additional buttons because it counts as an error.
Defeat Enemies While Flying

Once you have completed the memory game, you will board the Umbra, where the next stage of the mini-game will start. In this level, you will be under the attack of the flying monsters. The goal is to deal enough damage to them within the time limit. The most effective way would be to continuously fly around in big circles by backing off either to the right or the left. This keeps the enemies grouped together, allowing you to hit multiple targets at once and complete the challenge much faster.
Travel a Long Distance Quickly

In the last mini-game, you have to cover a certain distance fast. Just go upwards and cover a sufficient distance during the limited time. Maintaining your flight at a high altitude makes it easy to complete this task. After completing it, you can start feeding the Umbra with your desired food item. After the first feeding, you will have to wait for its hunger to become strong once more. In every feeding session, you must do the following three things:
- Finish the memory game.
- Defeat a sufficient number of flying enemies.
- Cover a large distance during the limited time.
- Feed the Umbra once again.
Repeat the above cycle till the taming meter reaches 100%. Note that if you fail in the memory game, you instantly fall from the creature. That’s why having Parachutes at your disposal is a good idea.
Also, you can grab onto the Umbra with your Grappling Hook while falling from it. The good thing is that even after making a mistake, not all progress is lost. You just have to get back onto the Umbra and keep going. Once you tame it, you can put the Umbra Saddle on.
Spawn Umbra Using Console Commands
If you’re playing in single-player or have admin access to a server, you can spawn an Umbra using the following console command:
cheat gmsummon “Umbra_Character_BP_C” 150
Umbra Overview

The Umbra performs well both on the ground and in the air, but it truly shines while flying. It can fly very fast, dodge all the attacks easily and make use of various strong abilities both in terms of distance as well as melee. The Umbra has two different flight modes. One of them is called Hover Mode and allows it to remain in the air and move slowly. It is great for attacks on the enemies or using abilities.
Dodge Abilities
The most prominent feature of the Umbra is the ability to move easily. The Umbra has a few dodge techniques that make it impossible for the enemy to hit you.
- Barrel roll to the left.
- Barrel roll to the right.
- Complete rolling maneuver.
- Rolling dodge technique to go up.
These techniques make the Umbra very effective in PvP because it can always be moving without getting hit.
Lock-On Tracking Attack
The Umbra also has a lock-on targeting system. If the crosshair turns yellow as you aim at an enemy, your ranged attack will automatically lock on to the target. Regardless of whether the enemy tries to move after you shoot at him, your projectile will follow him.
Basic Attacks
The Umbra comes with several different attacks. The default attack is the fast bite, which functions effectively on land as well as air combat. By pressing down the attack button, you can perform a spin attack and attack many enemies at once in a circle around the player. There is also a ranged attack that includes shooting out of a plasma blast and dealing a splash damage on the group of enemies. When charged, the attack shoots out more plasma projectiles than usual.
Plasma Dash Teleport
One of the Umbra’s most unique abilities combines its plasma attack with a dash. Once you have shot a plasma projectile, you will see the red timer appear for a while. As long as you have activated your special skill within the time indicated by the red timer, then the creature will instantly dash towards where the projectile is at an amazing speed.
Diving Ability
Build up your speed, direct yourself down, and dive towards the ground for an increase in momentum. This will help you move at a fast pace or even attack your enemies on the ground.
Stamina
The disadvantage of the Umbra is that it has limited stamina. It is not possible for it to hover in the air for a long time, especially those of the lower levels with bad stats.
Umbra Horn
The other helpful item is the “Umbra Horn.” This item works only when your “Umbra” is near enough for you to summon it using the horn. Using the horn summons the “Umbra” right away to your location. The “Umbra” picks you up and allows you to ride on it. Your Umbra also needs to be within range and not busy fighting other creatures.
Teleport to Your Umbra
In addition to signaling your Umbra through the use of the horn, there is also an option to use the newly-added hand device that will allow you to teleport right to the saddle of your flying mount when it is close to you.
