A Toxic Trail is an ongoing quest within the ARC Raiders’ quest chain to discover the culprit poisoning the water supply. This quest sends the player to the location that featured in the previous quest to gather more information to proceed with the water contamination chain.
While it’s possible to complete this task without extracting, it’s absolutely essential to do so. The key received towards the end of this task isn’t needed right away, but could be useful for acquiring good loot, and it would be frustrating to lose it to PvP combat.
How To Start A Toxic Trail
In order to start A Toxic Trail, go back to the Dam Battlegrounds map and return to the same drain you found in The Source of the Contamination quest.
Drain Location
- Region: Outside the Water Treatment Centrer
- Coming from the north, passing through the swampland
- The drain is situated in shallow and contaminated water located outside the facility
This time, you do not have to do anything with the barrel itself. Just go wade in the tainted waters for a few seconds, and the quest should be updated.
Tracking the Barrel’s Source
After the objective update, you are asked to look for clues about where the barrel is from. Fortunately, the answer is right near.
Go west through the swamp, where you’ll find a truck half-submerged in the swampy waters. It is immediately visible if you’re close by.
Unloading Trucks is a bit tricky since one has to:
- Come close to the truck and engage with it to take a photo
- Subsequently, engage the truck door to search it
Inside, you’ll find a key indicating that the truck is indeed the cause of this contamination.
Important Item Acquired

Once you have acquired this key, place it in your safe pocket if you have one. Though it is not required for the next quest, the key could pay off down the road when doing Spaceport missions.
With this evidence gathered, the search is finished. Your closest exit is the Central Swamp Lift, but be careful. Raider extraction points such as this one can be easily camped out by other raiders, so proceed with stealth and listen for any movement around you before calling the lift.
