Along the way, you will meet a stranger holding a torch, but he quickly gets eaten alive by a wave of rats that fall from above. Right after the cutscene, when you can take control of Amicia, you should start running away from the wave of rats heading toward you. Keep running till you reach the door that Lucas is holding for you. There is a torch net to the door that will help you ignite your way and keep the rats at bay. Pick it up and make your way through the area.
Along the way, you will notice many unlit torches and bonfire pits, use the torchlight to light them up and keep the rats away even further.
You will soon reach a wall that you have to climb up, and where you have to leave your torch behind. Once you get to the other side, use the stick and set it on fire to light the way, but these are only temporary.
If you keep going straight, you will find another bonfire and a rack of sticks nearby. Light the bonfire and use the stick to keep going. Towards the end of the passage, there are two bonfires, one on the ground and one hanging above. Light up the stick nearby and toss it at the hanging bonfire, then use your sling and rock to break the chain. It will fall close to a ladder, and you have to run and make your way up.
Even through your above-ground, your troubles are far from over. You have to cross a wooden beam to get across the platform. While you make it past safely, Lucas will fall through. Pick up the stick nearby and light it up using the fire from the bonfire, then walk ahead to reach the next bonfire and light it up. There are some sticks nearby as well, light one up and toss it to the bonfire on the other side, where Lucas is. He will then ask you for a stick, and you should toss that as well. He will soon join you on your side, and you can take the ladder next to you and escape the area.
