Highlights

  • Magnus does not deal with low damage, he punishes for bad positioning.
  • If Magnus has not locked onto your Tank, the battle can quickly turn into a disaster.
  • Controlled spacing will create opportunities for you during the fight, and will also cause Magnus to waste turns by executing his most damaging attacks.

Magnus is a skill-based boss that tests your management of position, spacing, and aggro, rather than raw damage, in the very early stages of Mewgenics. He appears in Act One of the Alley approximately halfway through the level. The best approach to defeating Magnus is to form disciplined formations and move with control, as a careless placement can quickly lead to losing the fight.

Magnus Overview

In Act One’s Alley, Magnus is a swift mid-boss who adds tremendous punishment for poor positioning with speed and instant kill damage (especially on early runs) but gets easier when you begin to control his movement more predictably.

Magnus has a preference for aggressive combat, so you should attempt to anchor him and attack him outside his damage range.

  • Tank is ideal for keeping Magnus under control as he attacks and will also protect other units when Magnus launches burst attacks against them.
  • Fighters should be used as flankers (not as frontline units) and back attacking is always worthwhile, but can be risky.
  • Ranged units (Mages/Hunters) are important because they will provide you with an opportunity to do damage from a distance without putting themselves in direct danger.

If you’ve reached the advanced collar tiers of Thief or Cleric, then you’re at a distinct advantage for this particular fight. However, having a Tank, Fighter, or Ranged setup will still work for you if you maintain solid positioning.

Key Formation Rule: Magnus must always be prepared to attack your Tank unit. All other units should be positioned away from him at angles that create diagonal lines, never filling out the horizontal area and should be positioned away from him at angles to create distance between each.

How Magnus Fights

Magnus has two ways to do damage; however, both ways will ensure you are taking advantage of poorly arranged units and clustered groups of enemies. The most important part of Magnus’ playstyle is using these two abilities properly and not trying to deal damage quickly, but rather knowing when to use them and when not to.

Magnus’s Spin is a stationary, multi-hit attack that damages all nearby units. Although it doesn’t reposition him, it can quickly overwhelm any character without strong defenses. This attack should only ever affect your Tank, while all other units stay well clear of its range.

Positioning in tall grass significantly reduces the damage taken, and ranged units should always remain outside the Spin radius. When your team is positioned correctly, Magnus spinning turns into a wasted action rather than a real threat.

Magnus has a signature attack that involves lunging at a target, hitting it, then moving abruptly sideways, often crossing a considerable area of the arena. This is where most of the danger comes from, as it can strike additional units that are positioned too closely together.

The best way to mitigate this problem is to position your Tank directly in front of Magnus to control his target selection, while preventing him from striking any units to the left or the right of the Tank. Do not attempt to attack Magnus from behind unless your Fighter is hidden or your Tank can quickly regain aggro.
