During the lawsuit filed by FTC against Microsoft’s impending acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft included a chart showcasing how Xbox fared in comparison to other consoles, namely Sony’s PlayStation and the Nintendo Switch. The rise in popularity with the PS and the Switch all boiled down to the list of exclusive titles, and the fact that they have a larger share in mobile gaming, something that Xbox couldn’t crack.
The chart details how Xbox has a meager 0.3% revenue from its global shares in mobile gaming, while other platforms take up a larger chunk. Microsoft’s imminent acquisition of Activision was further amplified by this, stating that this would be a huge step in Xbox entering the mobile market. When it came to exclusive titles, Xbox just took up 10% of the market in 2021, with Nintendo and Sony having 40% and 50% respectively.
In the counterargument against FTC, Microsoft has shown that Xbox has put a very tiny dent in the overall revenue and sale of the console and its titles, compared to the PlayStation and the Switch. The move to get Activision under its wing will help them understand the market more and improve its standing in mobile gaming and exclusive titles. Microsoft further emphasized that they will not be using these game titles for their benefit, and would rather make them accessible across all gaming platforms.
