High on Life has become Xbox Game Pass’ biggest launch, and also the biggest 3rd party launch on the platform. Since its release, it has been the biggest single-player game launched for the Game Pass. With its growing success, High on Life creator Justin Roiland has come forward with why he and his studio, Squanch Games, have decided to put the game on Game Pass.
During the recent Xbox Podcast with Larry Hryb, Roiland explained that after a lot of research and contemplation, it was decided that High on Life will be launched on Game Pass. The Xbox Game Pass is a subscription-type service that has a monthly payment fee, but players will get access to all the games within the service. It is not required to pay the full price for a game when it is out on Game Pass, so it seems to be the best move to introduce High on Life on the platform.
To further prove his point, Roiland explained that if the game had come out like how most games do, there would be an off chance that people would not have picked it up. Putting the game on Game Pass helped it surpass sales and get a wider reach. He also mentioned that he was informed by insiders that having the game on Game Pass would get it over 7x more sales than other non-Game Pass titles that are being shipped. He also mentioned players’ skepticism over the title, and instead of paying the full price and regretting their purchase, they would try it on the subscription platform without repercussions. Roiland concluded by stating that the Game Pass is a powerful tool to get better audience reach, and offers a “huge value-add in that respect.”
