Not every quest in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon offers a clear-cut moral decision. The Wayward Son quest is one such, which puts you squarely in the middle of a political as well as personal dilemma—one where the truth would prove more harmful than beneficial.
This guide will walk you through where to find Vin, going into the crypt, and making the most rational decision for the Children of Morrigan.
Where to Find Vin

As a former member of the Children of Morrigan, Self will assign you a delicate mission: finding Vin, a spy who has infiltrated far into Kamelotian culture. Vin has infiltrated the position of surrogate son to Legate Denholm, with the intention of taking his place and influence—gaining for the Children a critical foot in the door behind enemy lines.
Vin has not checked in, so Self tasks you with investigating how he’s doing. Head to Cuanacht, then cross the bridge into the Kamelotian base. There, you’ll find Vin—a young armored man who looks plainly distraught. He thinks that he may well actually be Denholm’s actual son, abandoned years ago. It’s a creepy find, considering his entire mission has been to someday assassinate the Legate.
How to Access Denholm’s Family Crypt

To find out the truth, just speak with Legate Denholm. Once you discover why you are asking, he will admit that he has not visited his wife’s and son’s graves since his return—largely because the undead infest the location now. Offer to go for him, and he will give you a key to the family tomb.
Head north to the abandoned village and find the graveyard. Enter the crypt with the key and be ready for combat; the level is inhabited by zombies.
Optional Boss: The graveyard also contains an optional boss in the form of a ghost called Tibby. You have the option to skip this battle, but it’s a good challenge if you feel like taking it on.
Explore the crypt in depth. You’ll find the grave of Denholm’s wife, but more importantly, you’ll notice no indication of a child’s burial—a crucial lead.
The Choice: Lie to Vin or Tell the Truth?

Once you’ve cleaned out the crypt, return to Vin. Now you must make a choice—each with far-reaching consequences.
Telling the Truth
If you go out of the crypt without continuing with any other investigation, you will have no choice but to tell Vin what occurred. He will take your word as confirmation that Denholm is his father. Driven by rage and dishonesty, he will attack the Legate.
Things do not go well in the confrontation. Denholm murders Vin. You return to Self and tell him what occurred. The mission is a failure, although technically it is complete.
Lying to Vin (The Better Solution)
Before leaving the crypt, check the coffin at the left-hand corner, behind Denholm’s wife’s tomb. Press it to reveal an inscription that a child is buried there. Upon reading it, a child skeleton will appear.
Bring back the remains to Vin and tell him that the child interred there is Denholm’s son. This fraud beats Vin into submission of his notion that he is Denholm’s heir. He realizes how close he had come to jeopardizing the mission out of emotional attachments and re-dedicates himself to the cause of the Children of Morrigan.
Quest Completion and Consequences
Regardless of your decision, go back to Self at Morrigan’s Hollow to complete the quest. She will react differently depending on your action:
- If Vin lives, she’ll praise your cunning and devotion to the overall mission.
- If Vin is killed, she’ll be displeased, but the mission will still be recorded as finished.
Wayward Son is one of the more ethically complex quests in Tainted Grail, testing your ability to place strategy over sentiment. It may be honorable to be truthful, but lying to Vin leads to a more favorable outcome for your faction—and ultimately Avalon.
