The only way you can split your inventory items is between your backpack and another storage unit like a chest or campfire. You can start building storage chests early in the game and place them around your base. Next, all you need to do is interact with the chest and you will get two pop-up menus. On the left is your backpack and on the right is your storage container. All you have to do is move one item from your inventory and place them into the storage container. This can be a bit tedious as you would always have to head over to your home base to transfer items. The only way you can split items while on the go is by crafting campfires. But even then, you can’t split a lot of items, and only items like consumables and essential materials for the campfire can be split here.
If it is too much of a hassle to keep running to your base and splitting up your items, you can always turn extra items into Essence Dust. This can keep your backpack looking more organized while getting rid of non-essential items. As for splitting items within your backpack, the only item that you can split are Plant Fibers. Besides that you would have to visit a chest or campsite to place extra materials within it.
