When you start a new MyGM career in NBA 2K27, your background, skills, and perks will determine the traits used to shape your GM. Although you can gather more skills and perks as you move up, picking the right settings at the beginning is advisable for a stronger foundation.
Pick the Custom Backstory

The Custom backstory gives you more power than the other options because it allows you to control how your stats are distributed. Rather than heavily specializing in one area, you get one point on all attributes and receive six points that you can distribute however you see fit.
The skills available include Offensive Coaching, Defensive Coaching, Sports Medicine, Business, Charisma, and Analytics. The Custom backstory also allows you to choose two perks right from the start, which is a definite advantage for an offense-focused GM.
How to Spend Your Attribute Points
For the recommended setup, put your six extra points into the following:
| Attribute | Starting Rate |
| Business | 1 star |
| Sports Medicine | 1 star |
| Charisma | 1 star |
| Analytics | 1 stars |
| Defensive Coaching | 2 star |
| Offensive Coaching | 3 stars |
The majority of your investment will be put in Offensive Coaching, which will, in turn, help improve your team’s offensive abilities. This boost is not just in shooting, but in other areas as well.
The second largest investment is given to Defensive Coaching, while the rest of the four categories will remain at their original one-star level. You can also adjust the distribution based on your selected team. For example, if your franchise is already good at handling trades, putting in more Charisma may mean little to you.
Best Starting Perks
The first two perks to select are Shot Doctor and Extra Shot Doctor. These two Coaching perks work particularly well in conjunction with the investment in Offensive Coaching.
Combined, the two perks give a total six-point boost to shooting-related attributes and improve the player’s ability to shoot three-pointers, mid-range shots, and close-range shots, which allows for better chances of hitting green releases on the shot meter.
Selecting both perks also helps to establish an offensive focus for the Custom setup from the beginning of the game, in addition to the overall boost given by Offensive Coaching.
Why This Setup Is Effective
This build’s main strength lies in its capacity to deliver an offensive boost to a player’s team without allocating all starting points to the same category. Offensive Coaching maximizes players’ overall bonus in offence. Defensive Coaching gives you some additional support on that side of the ball, and the two shooting perks further strengthen your scoring ability.
This offensive focus can become particularly useful at higher difficulty levels, where defending CPU-controlled teams becomes more challenging. Improving your ability to score can help offset some of that difficulty.
All in all, Custom is probably the best backstory to start with due to its versatility. To begin with, the most suitable distribution is 3 points for Offensive Coaching, 2 points for Defensive Coaching, and 1 point for each remaining attribute. At the same time, the choice of Shot Doctor and Extra Shot Doctor is the best for starting perks.
