There are a handful of NPCs who will aid you in certain boss battles. The more NPCs you find and talk to, the higher your chances are of summoning them later on. So the first thing you should do is interact with any NPC you come across on your journey. You will never know who you can summon during your time of need. The next thing you need to keep in mind is that you cannot summon NPC allies for all boss battles. Most main bosses will have a summon symbol before you enter the arena, but optional bosses should be fought on your own. Also, the way to summon NPCs won’t appear till after you have dealt with the boss for the first time. If you are defeated, you can then take the aid of an NPC to help you win the fight a second time. But each first main boss fight is a solo battle.
To summon NPCs, before stepping through the moth barrier to fight the boss, you will notice an outline of a person filled with moths right beside the barrier. If you interact with the outline, you get an option to summon an NPC. The NPCs who appear will be random for each boss fight, but it will always be someone who you have interacted with in the past.
