The Madman’s Longsword is one of the DLC questlines in the Brushes with Death DLC. To obtain it, you’ll need to find an odd painter and a series of creepy events as you help him paint an ugly masterpiece.
You must possess the Brushes with Death DLC and enable it. You must be well advanced in the core game so that you’ll be able to find yourself in the Sasau area and talk to prominent NPCs like Master Fresco Painter Voyta.
How to Get the Madman’s Longsword?
Talk to Voyta the Painter
- Location: Sasau Monastery region (specific locations may vary slightly).
Initiate the quest by speaking with Voyta, a man obsessed with completing a painting of death and misery. He will mention that he is short of inspiration and tell you to search for an old dugout that is said to have an unholy aura.
Travel to the Dugout
Follow the map marker for the quest “Brushes with Death.” The dugout is way back in the forest, northwest of Sasau. It’s a hidden cave-like shelter, half buried and overgrown.
Inside the Dugout
You will see a nutty hermit or “madman” muttering religious confessions and wearing tattered monk robes. The atmosphere will be spooky, with skulls, drops of blood, and religious inscriptions. Search the room tactfully—the Longsword of the Madman will be either in a chest or on a weapons rack near the back wall.
The longsword has an inscription in Latin—”Confiteor Deo Omnipotenti,” which means “I confess to Almighty God.” This inscription may relate to the madman’s apparent guilt and remorse and indicate a dark history involving the monastery or the Hussite wars.

Crafting the Madman’s Longsword
If you’d like to create the sword yourself or merely want to possess a second one, you can craft it in a blacksmithing forge once you’ve found the proper crafting blueprint.
Crafting Requirements:
- Item Sketch – Madman’s Longsword: Can be found in the same dugout or purchased from certain sketch vendors after completing the DLC quest.
- Materials Needed: 1x Fastening Material and 3x Frankfurt Steel
Make sure your blacksmithing skill is high enough to craft tier 4 weapons. Hardened steel tongs and a cooling trough improve durability and quality.
