Lockpicking is definitely one of the harder mechanics to pick up in Gothic 1 Remake; especially when you’re just starting out with understanding how the pin system works. Luckily though, there are some tips to help make this process quite manageable. This guide covers the basics of lockpicking, includes helpful strategies, and will help you learn how to use the skill successfully.
Practice Lockpicking with A Ring For Fingers Quest

Lockpicking might be hard, but there are some techniques you can try that might help you with your lockpicking skills. An excellent way to practice would be during the A Ring For Fingers quest at the Old Camp, where you have to steal a ring from Scatty’s chest.
When you attempt a lock, please remember to create a save beforehand. If your lockpick breaks, you can simply reload from the save and try again.
How the Lockpicking System Works

To find Scatty’s chest you will have to go to the Arena District where there is a wooden house with a posting board outside. Once you find the house, go inside and you will discover Scatty’s chest.

To unlock the chest, all the pins must be moved to the center position which will result in them becoming red in color and unlocking. When moving the first pin you should start with the pins on the edges. Usually, the top pin is the safest to move first because moving this pin will not affect any of the other pins.

When you’re moving lower pins, be aware that they may shift other pins below them too. Continue adjusting the pin placements away from the edges whenever possible. Your goal is to place your bottom pin directly in the center as it is the only pin that is not affected by any other pins above it. Once the pin is in place, it will stay there and you can begin working with the other pins.

Best Lockpicking Strategy
A common approach is moving the pins away from the edges, then securing the lowest pin that is not affected, and finally moving up through each of the locks. Some situations may still result in a broken lockpick, which is why saving beforehand is important.
After completing the quest successfully, Fingers can also give players Lockpicking Skill training if players have the Learning Points to spend.
