The max level cap for your initial gameplay is at 50, but you can quickly scale up to level 100 later on. To do that, complete the main story in either Action Focus or Story Focus modes to unlock the NG+ mode called Final Fantasy. This is a tougher new game mode only accessible in NG+. You now have to grind through the game again under the Final Fantasy mode to bring the level cap to 100. Starting NG+ under Action or Story mode will not help you break the level cap.
Final Fantasy mode is twice as tough and introduces harder enemies. Of course, you can make quick work of them if you own the Ultima Weapon for your playthrough.
