Nostos is Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate’s third campaign mission, picking up the story soon after Fallow’s completion. Though the mission itself is a short one, it showcases crucial mechanics—specifically, the utilization of Matterspark—and includes a multi-stage boss fight that puts your ability to think on your feet to the test.
Here is a step-by-step guide to how to finish Nostos, what you can expect on the mission, and how to kill the Exile Captain.
The Mission Start: Head to the Progenitor’s Scopoplex

Begin by going back to the Aionian Campus and initiating the mission terminal—exactly as you did in the last quest. After launching, the first thing you do is ride a derelict subway to the Progenitor’s Scopoplex.
As you continue, your Ghost and Lodi will give you background lore, which will get you information about the House of Exile and the history behind the region. You will have light resistance from minor Fallen enemies as you leave the train and into a cave-like region.
Disabling the Barrier: Gathering Charged Motes

You’ll be faced with an energy barrier in your path soon. To de-activate it, you need to gather 5 Charged Motes and put them into a node, the same way it works in Gambit.
To create these motes:
- Make use of the Matterspark transformer close by to change forms.
- Kill enemies with Matterspark pulses (they won’t give you motes otherwise).
- Once you have 5 motes, put them into the specified place to drop the barrier and proceed.
- This mechanic will become active again shortly, so familiarize yourself with it now.
The Final Battle Approach
After fighting through another small patrol of Fallen, you’ll make your way into the Scopoplex, where you can drop a Rally Flag and recover your abilities and ammo. This leads into the final battle of the mission.
Boss Fight: How to Beat the Exile Captain

The main enemy in Nostos is a powerful Exile Captain protected by a multi-phase energy shield. The battle unfolds in three parts:
Phase One: Initial Assault
Start by unloading damage into the Captain. After reducing roughly a third of its health, the boss will trigger a shield phase, making it immune to all damage.
Phase Two: Mote Collection Redux
In order to shatter the shield, you have to gather 10 Charged Motes, done in the same way as before:
- Use Matterspark to kill waves of Fallen adds.
- Deposit and pick up the motes in the indicated terminal.
- When deposited, the Captain’s shield will fall, and you can continue your attack.
Phase Three: Mine Defusal Challenge
For the final phase, the Exile Captain will activate two explosive mines, each placed in opposite corners of the arena. You’ll have 90 seconds to disarm both.
To disarm a mine:
- Enter the glowing circle beneath the mine.
- Remain inside until the progress bar fills completely.
- The mines are protected by bubbles that block enemy gunfire, so you’re relatively safe while defusing—but beware of rushing enemies.
- After disabling both mines, concentrate all your fire on the Captain to end the battle.
Finishing the Mission
When the Exile Captain is defeated, a reward chest will appear. Although loot is limited, the brevity of the mission makes it an excellent stopping point or a fast method to advance.
A short conversation between Ikora Rey and Lodi wraps up the mission, giving context to the growing threat posed by the House of Exile. After this, you’re free to return to orbit or continue exploring Kepler to pursue other objectives or level up through Portal activities.
