If you are just starting, then try to quickly complete the Main Quest 7 – A Chance Encounter. This will give you the Broadsword blueprint, which can then be crafted at Cid’s Hideaway. You can purchase the Broadsword from Charon’s Toll as well for 500 Gil, which is quite cheap for early gameplay. It will offer 80 attack and stagger, and can be upgraded to 100 in both.
Later on, it is best to swap them out quickly for the Longsword and Bastard Sword. You can get both these weapons after completing the Main Quest 14 – Awakening. After that, you will acquire the blueprint for the Longsword and the Bastard Sword. These too can be crafted at Cid’s Hideaway or purchased from Charon’s Toll. The Longsword costs 700 gil, while the Bastard’s Sword costs 1000 gil.
As for stats, the Longsword has 95 in attack and stagger, and can be upped to 115 in both after +2 reinforcement. The Bastard Sword has 110 base attack and stagger, and can be further reinforced to give 130 in both after +2 reinforcement. This is quite a decent weapon to have that will help you in the early to mid-game.
