Alen Wake 2 is a story-based action-thriller that picks up where the first game left off years back. As expected with an action-thriller, there is quite a bit of combat you will come across right from the start of the game testing your understanding of the game and skill. Choosing the right difficulty is crucial so you do not have a hurdle you cannot cross. At this time, we do not have info on whether you can reset the difficulty mid-game.

Alen Wake 2 offers three difficulties – Story, Normal, and Hard. Upon the release of the NG+, you will have the option to choose from an additional difficulty – Nightmare. Here are the details on Alan Wake 2 Difficulty Settings and which to choose.

Alan Wake 2 Difficulty Settings

Alen Wake 3 will have 3 difficulty options at launch and an additional difficulty post-launch. The variation of difficulty allows players of different tastes to experience the game at their own leisure and skill. Here are the details of each difficulty.

  1. Story
    • The easiest difficulty in the game is the Story. If you choose this difficulty, the combat will not pose any challenge whatsoever. The game will be focused on mystery-solving and exploration.
  2. Normal
    • In normal difficulty, you can expect a bit of combat, but not overwhelming. It’s a balance between survival, mystery-solving, and exploration. Unlike the Story difficulty, it’s not a walk in the park and you would be expected to take advantage of the game’s mechanics to survive.
  3. Hard
    • Hard as you would expect it is hard with exceptional understanding of the game and the skills required to survive. The combat is significantly challenging compared to Normal.
  4. Nightmare
    • This is not a difficulty you can choose when you start the game. The nightmare difficulty will only be available when you launch an NG+ after your first run of the game. The combat in this difficulty is very hard and suggested only for veteran players.

Which Difficulty to Choose in Alen Wake 2

The choice of difficulty is a very personal option. It depends on the skill and the preference of the player. If you are someone who plays games for its story and don’t like to do boss fights over and over again, until you get it right, the Story difficulty is best suited.

For players who enjoy a bit of challenge but not something that gets them stuck with a game, the normal difficulty is what you should go with. Most of the gamers will belong to this category and will likely choose the normal difficulty as it provides the best of both worlds – combat and mystery-solving.

The Hard and Nightmare difficulty is for players who are confident in thier combat skills and excel in games. You can choose the Hard mode in your first playthrough and then go for the Nightmare in NG+.
