God of War (2018) was an amazing game with unparalleled combat, story and character but Ragnarok goes a step further and expands upon this world of Nine Realms. God of War Ragnarok was recently released and it gives players at least a solid 30 hours of gameplay and we love it. Players are all praise for this new update and there are some very good reasons for it.

Why God of War: Ragnarok is So Good

Most players didn’t expect much from this update except a few combat improvements, new regions, stories and so on but they got so much more and we’re here to breakdown why. We’ll list some key features that God of War Ragnarok improved upon to make their game even better.

Animation

The animation has improved by a mile in God of War Ragnarok. Even on Performance Mode, the game runs a resolution of 1440p at 60 fps. The Quality Mode will lock your game’s resolution at 4K and try to run as much fps as possible.

Overall the experience is even smoother than it was before and the animations are also snappy and beautiful. All of this is of course on its preferred PS5 module and not PS4 module even though the game can also run on the older PS4.

Music and Sound Design

The sound design is as amazing as before so it’s a great immersive experience. The music is great too and as a bonus, the composer Bear McCreary is also surprisingly featured in the game. He even hands out a side quest to your character so be sure to keep your eyes peeled and checking out all the side quests.

Combat

The combat has expectedly gotten better. Players can mix and match and have flexible playstyles to suit their tastes. Kratos’s move sets remain the same but he too has gotten a few improvements. What’s more- Atreus is a much better fighter now as he actually comes handy as a support.

As for your gear and build, unlike last time, Ragnarok actually demands you to pay attention to equipment and builds now. Basic stat knowledge is necessary and combat skills must actually be developed by the players if they don’t want to get blindsided by a sudden difficult enemy.

Monsters & Enemies

One of the complaints players had with God of War (2018) was that there weren’t very many grand events occurring and that there weren’t many giant enemies or monsters to take on. God of War Ragnarok changes all that with tons of new bosses- most of whom are huge like giants. In short, big monsters- always good as they set the stage for a heroic battle and you get to test your skills against a worthy opponent.

Witing & Storytelling

The writing of God of War Ragnarok is much better than God of War (2018) which seems largely centred on Kratos and his son Atreus. Ragnarok, while also focusing on and testing the relationship between Kratos and Atreus, is also about something much bigger.

Ragnarok is coming and it threatens to collapse all Nine Realms. Many side characters won’t make it and it is the duty of Kratos and Atreus to find their role in this destined war and fulfil it. The stakes are actually high this time as it involves the whole of Nine Realms and not just Kratos and his son.

As such even the character writing is top-notch as players found caring about even the most random side-character. While most players may complain about how this update doesn’t solely focus on Kratos and Atreus, we believe it’s a net positive to have such a new and engaging cast of side-characters for players to enjoy.

Pacing

For a game with over 30 hours of content where the main questline alone is of at least 18-22 hours, the game is engaging and dynamic from beginning to the end. At no point do players feel dragged down and the progression is natural and believable.

However, it’s not all praise and awards for this new game as a few problems seem to have become more prominent and those must also be addressed. We have a different article for that purpose but if you like what you read here and it’s up your alley, we highly recommend you start playing already.
