To open the gate, it is necessary to solve a puzzle with Sofia and Hugo in Chapter 11 of A Plague. You probably know what to do, but opening the door means opening smaller gates and pulling levers in a certain order.

Here are the instructions to open the barred doorway:

Enter the small corridor on the left side of the gate hall.
You need Sofia to turn the wheel of a portcullis so you can pull the cartwheel out.
Place the cart in the hall after pulling it out.
To lift the portcullis nearby, ask Sofia to pull the lever on the left side of the gate.
