The Sphinx, Devourer of the Unworthy, is a tough boss found in Valor Mortis. This boss fights William in two different phases and puts his dodging and parrying skills to the test. Players come across this boss in the Salt Mines in Chapter 4. The Sphinx uses fast melee combos as well as powerful projectile attacks. Here’s how to prepare for the fight, counter its moves, and claim your rewards.

The Sphinx, Devourer of the Unworthy, is encountered in the Dark Descent quest in the Salt Mines as a two-phase boss that uses fast melee strikes and ranged attacks. To fight it, you will need to bring a pistol together with your chosen melee weapon to counter both types of attacks. The Blunderbuss has a good damage output right away but is not the best option for the fight since pistols can hold more ammunition.

Phase 1: Countering Melee Combos

The Sphinx often initiates three attack combos where it combines claw swipes with lunges as well as jumping strikes. By parrying these combos, you are able to deal posture damage to the creature while also creating opportunities for you to counterattack.

Attack when the Sphinx has finished its combo, and use your pistol whenever it is taking a swing to attack you. Be aware of the Sphinx’s jump attacks as there are some variations that cannot be blocked at all.

Phase 2: Surviving Enhanced Attacks

After the first defeat, the Sphinx speeds up the game and has some very dangerous ranged abilities. Whenever energy orbs explode, you must jump over the resulting ground waves so as to avoid damage. In addition, the creature spawns nine purple pillars across three-dimensional planes, so look for gaps between their trajectories.

Evade its energy beam and short-range breath attacks, and be aware of the speedy tail strikes and advancing slashes. It is important to parry melee combos whenever possible to leave chances for delivering damage in between. On defeating the Sphinx, William gets 20,000 Catalysts as reward.
