If you want to become a mage in Gothic 1 Remake, you’ll need to complete The Price of Magic quest to prove your potential to Torrez. He’ll give you a task in which you’ll have to go and find certain items for him. In this guide, we’ve covered everything you’ll need to know for completing the quest as efficiently as possible.
Becoming a Mage
Becoming a mage in Gothic 1 Remake is not an easy path. Before taking your first steps into the world of magic, you need to learn the novice level of the Magic Circle and obtain your first rune.
You also need to decide what type of mage you want to become. Fire Mages are located in the Old Camp, while Water Mages are located in the New Camp. The guide recommends choosing Fire Mages because their spells apply a burning effect, allowing you to spend less mana when defeating enemies. Fire spells also look more impressive.
Finding Torrez
To begin your journey, head to the Northern Gate of the Old Camp and look for the mage Torrez. He can only be found during the daytime and is the only mage who leaves the Inner Zone.
Go straight ahead from the gate and follow the path downward. Torrez usually spends his time near the well, although he may occasionally wander around the area. If you do not find him immediately beside the well, check a little further ahead.
Speak with Torrez and tell him you have a letter for the Fire Mages. After your conversation, he will give you the quest The Price of Magic.
How to Complete The Price of Magic
To complete the quest, you need to bring Torrez the following materials:
- One blank piece of scroll paper
- Two wolf claws
Instead of learning hunting and collecting wolf claws from wolves, you can simply purchase them.
The merchant who sells the wolf claws can be found by following the road from Torrez’s location until you reach a nearby hut. He usually sits on a bench outside, but he may be inside the hut if it is raining. Buy two wolf claws from him.
After obtaining the claws, return to the Northern Gate. The blank scroll paper can be purchased from the local map maker, who lives nearby. From the gate, turn right and walk forward until you reach a location marked by a cauldron.
Once you have the blank scroll paper and two wolf claws, return to Torrez.
Choosing Between the Healing Rune and Firebolt Rune
After giving Torrez the required materials, he will explain that there are two ways to conjure magic: scrolls and runes. He will then allow you to choose between two runes:
- Healing Rune, which heals you
- Firebolt Rune, which scorches enemies
The recommended choice is the Healing Rune. The reason for this is that the Healing Rune costs more than 500 ore, while the Firebolt Rune costs around 300 ore. It is therefore better to take the Healing Rune as a reward and purchase a Firebolt Rune later.
Choose the Healing Rune, and Torrez will complete the ritual and grant you the rune.
