Before you can join and play with a friend, you and your teammate should first play solo and complete several quests. The quest in particular you have to complete is “The Aranahe Clan”. This quest is the 6th one in the questline, and you need to complete this and the earlier quests to unlock the co-op option. Once you clear it, you can head over to your map and select the settings option. Over there, you will find a new feature where you can play or invite your friends.
Co-op in Avatar Frontiers of Pandora does support crossplay, as long as you and your friend have added each other in Ubisoft Connect. All the progress you make in the Host’s world will be carried over to your world too. So if you haven’t reached a particular story level while the host has it unlocked or vice versa, the new changes will still be reflected in your world once you leave co-op. While in co-op, the progress the host makes will be the one reflected in both worlds.
