The only way to get coal in the game is to find it. Coal cannot be crafted, so you need to scavenge certain areas to get it. You can break down coal nodes using just a regular stone axe or pickaxe. To find coal, head inside houses and buildings and check out the fireplaces. If you spot charred wood, try harvesting it using the ax or pickaxe and get coal. You can also find charred wood and burnt trees while exploring the Wasteland or Burnt Forest biomes. Just use your preferred tool to harvest coal from them
While exploring the overworld, you might encounter coal nodes. They can be found underground as well as overhead, so try to keep your eyes peeled for them. Again, you can use a pickaxe to mine them and collect coal ore. Another place you can check for coal is near any metal works buildings. You can check the sides of the buildings to find them. And the final places you can check for coal is within loot crates and enemy drops
