At the FY2022 Q3 Earnings Announcement, Sony presented their sales figures for the PS5 during the third quarter of the Fiscal Year. Between October 1 and December 31, 2022, there were 7.1 million PS5 consoles shipped, which brings the total sale count up to 32.1 million till December 2022. This is an increase from the prior year for the same quarter, which just saw 3.2 million sales for the PS5.
PS5 Sales Compared to the PS4
While the PS5 has seen some growth, it does not compare to the sales growth of the PS4, which saw 8.4 million units sold during the same quarter. The PS4 currently stands at 117 million in sales and doesn’t seem to be slowing down.
Number of Game Units Sold for the PS4 and PS5
As for the games sold for the PS4 and PS5 during the third quarter, this is considerably lower, at 86.5 million compared to 92.7 million in the same quarter for the year prior. 20.8 million first-party games were sold for both consoles, which is higher compared to the previous year, which stood at 11.3 million.
Number of PS+ Subscribers and Monthly Active Users
The other stat that did go down is the number of PS+ subscribers, which is down to 46.4 million. The prior year it stood at 48.0 million subscribers, so last year saw a loss of 1.6 million subscribers. Even so, the amount of monthly active users saw a steep increase, having 112 Million active users monthly. This shows a one million increase from 2021, where the active users amounted to 111 million.
Sony’s Forecast for the Future
Sony is expecting a significant increase in sales for the next fiscal year, citing various circumstances like the impact of foreign exchange rates, an increase in first-party sales, and an increase in hardware sales. Last year Sony saw a significant increase in sales, which was up 53% and brought in 433.3 billion Yen in revenue. Their Operating Income also met an increase of up to 25%, which brought in 23.4 billion Yen in revenue. Sony will expect at least a 7% increase in Operating Income, while the Sales forecast will remain unchanged from the November Forecast.
