While exploring Qinghe in Where Winds Meet, players can find the remains of an old castle in Verdant Wilds. Inside, there is a series of puzzles tied to the Echoes of Old Battles side story that yield some useful rewards, including a Mystic Skill and some Echo Jade, so it’s worth completing.
This walkthrough will take you through each step, from triggering the quest to solving both the fire contraption puzzle and the large stone wall puzzle inside the ruins.

How to Start the Echoes of Old Battles Quest
Get to the marked location in Qinghe and talk to Lie Bujin. Once you’ve spoken to him, the side quest Echoes of Old Battles will start.
Head into the ruined castle, and you’ll catch a few bandits talking next to explosive barrels. You can eavesdrop for extra context, then shoot a fire arrow at the barrels to clear the area. Press on and be ready for another group of enemies to ambush you.
Head in the direction of the quest marker to find Zhang Bao, the bandit leader, interrogating one of the descendants of the Northern Vow. Defeat Zhang Bao, then open the chest in the training ground. In it will be a small puzzle map showing the location of several fire contraptions you must light.

How to Solve the Fire Contraptions Puzzle
In this ruined castle there are four fire contraptions. You may light them in any order.
- First contraption: Situated right in the training ground where you fought Zhang Bao.
- Second contraption: Head to the castle entrance. Facing the gate, take a left and go up the stairs, hopping on the broken wall. The second contraption is already lit.
- Third contraption: Follow the crumbled wall to its end. You should see another contraption on a high platform. Use the side platforms to climb up and light it.
- Fourth contraption: This one’s on the lower east platform. You can get to it by climbing up from the ground floor or jumping across from above. Ignore the contraption near the enemies below; that one’s not part of the puzzle. Keep climbing until you reach the higher platform with the correct device.
When all four have been lit, head back to the training ground. A pressure plate will be visible now. Perform Mighty Drop on the plate to open a secret underground entrance.
Inside, there is a soldier whose pose you can collect. Keep going and you’ll come across a large statue. Performing the Yanyun Oath pose here activates the wall puzzle.

How to Solve the Wall Puzzle in Where Winds Meet
This wall puzzle requires you to push three specific stone blocks in a certain order.
Starting from the entrance of the room, turn to the right wall and press the following blocks:
- The block containing the move or shift character (移)
- The block containing the hundred character (百)
Next, head to the left wall and click:
- The block containing the drift character (漂)
Completion of these gives way to the door of the secret chamber. Go through, slip behind the waterfall, and pull the lever for the opening of the final door. Inside, there’s a chest containing many rewards, but among them is the Touch of Death Assassin Mystic Skill, which allows you to sneak up behind enemies and instantly take them out with the press of a single button. Read the inscription on the wall to officially complete the Echoes of Old Battles quest.
