The Sepulchral Path side quest is a spooky and eerie adventure through one of the more dangerous tomb-like dungeons in Avalon. With eerie landscapes, tough enemies, and an important narrative link through the NPC Maggot, the quest is a must-accept for lore enthusiasts and adventurers seeking special equipment and experience.

How to Start the Quest

To begin the quest, you must speak with Maggot, a peculiar and important NPC who can typically be found in or near Cuanacht or other major settlements depending on your progress in the quest.

Requirements:

  • You will have met Maggot in previous parts of the main questline.
  • Completing or progressing in quests such as “Have a Nice Trip” will assist, as these dictate where Maggot is.
  • Speak with him when the option to choose “Ancient Scrolls” or “Old Lore” is presented, which will then activate the Sepulchral Path side quest.

(Note: The quest may not be available if you’ve avoided past conversations with Maggot. Make sure to progress through his dialogue tree every time you see him.)

Enter the Sepulchral Path Dungeon

Once your quest is initiated, your objective will be to locate the Ancient Scrolls found in the Sepulchral Path, a treacherous underground mausoleum. The dungeon is to the south of the Wyrd Camp, in a rocky, fog-covered valley.

How to Get There:

  • Head south or southwest from Cuanacht.
  • Locate a small ruin entrance covered up in the hills or cliffs.
  • As you get near, the quest marker should pop (if the quest is tracked correctly).

The region is filled with fog and ambient threat, so carry Wyrd candles and maintain a high Perception stat to prevent missing traps or environmental signals.

Explore the Dungeon

Once inside the Sepulchral Path, you’ll find yourself navigating tight corridors, chambers filled with old bones, and eerie statues. This part of the quest leans heavily into exploration and light puzzle-solving.

Enemies to Expect:

  • Undead soldiers
  • Spirit-bound guardians
  • Potentially a mid-boss guarding the scrolls

These foes resist standard attacks and are corruption damage, so think of using:

  • Weapons with elemental or sacred enchantments
  • Armour that resists dark or wyrd power
  • A good block or shield construction, as the majority of foes attack from corners

Primary Objectives Within the Dungeon:

  • Activate pressure plates or switches to open sealed doors.
  • Bypass obstacles like swinging blades and poison vents.
  • Investigate coffins or ceremonial altars—one holds the Ancient Scrolls.

Optional Lore Items: You may find scrolls or artifacts containing more background information on Avalon’s ancient past. These are not strictly needed for the quest but add to world-building.

(Note: If there is a door that won’t open, check the area for secret switches or statues that can be turned. Lighting all braziers in a room can also activate hidden things.)

Retrieve the Ancient Scrolls

Once you’ve navigated through the central corridor and killed the guardians, you’ll find a small crypt room with a stone pedestal.

  • Speak to the pedestal to collect the Ancient Scrolls.
  • This will sometimes trigger a combat battle, so you should be ready.

When you’ve collected the scrolls and defeated any enemies, your next objective is to bring them back to Maggot and present them to him.

Return to Maggot

Return to where Maggot currently is, with the scrolls in hand. His location will vary depending on your gameplay, but he typically is:

  • In Cuanacht, if you’ve only entered this area.
  • At his camp or hut outside the central village, after having completed the main quest.

Go up to him and take the speech option to give back the Ancient Scrolls. He will thank you for bringing them back, and the quest is complete.

Quest Rewards

Completing the Sepulchral Path side quest will reward you with:

  • Experience Points: A decent boost, especially if you completed the optional challenges in the tomb.
  • Special Item (Varying by Patch): On occasion, players have reported receiving addon items like rings or trinkets that offer an intelligence or magic resistance bonus. Iterations of the quest may also reward currency or an Ancient Relic that has a connection to future quests.
  • Lore Progression: Such scrolls are usually about world secrets beyond, e.g., Wyrd corruption, holy rituals, and the ancient religion—stuff that has the potential to open up more conversation in other quests.
