Once Human – How to Stay Warm or Cool in The Way of Winter New Mechanics

The Way of Winter is the biggest and most content-packed update for Once Human since its launch, emphasizing hardcore multiplayer survival in the polar north. This adventure unfolds on a brand-new map located in the remote areas of Nalcott. If you’re struggling to survive the cold temperatures that cause hypothermia or the intense heat that leads to heatstroke, this guide is for you.

How to Stay Warm or Cool in Way of Winter New Mechanics

You’ll see a small temperature gauge below your mini-map, which is also found in the Inventory section. This gauge is essential for surviving both heat and cold in the Once Human The Way of Winter scenario.

In the Once Human The Way of Winter scenario, there are five different temperature statuses, each with its own effects also keep in mind that the temperature ranges for each status vary based on your body weight. Below mentioned are the five different temperature statuses:

FrostThe Frost status kicks in when the temperature drops below -50° C.The character quickly loses energy, and their body temperature drops sharply. They receive a stack of Frozen every 3 seconds, causing them to lose 5% HP per second and become slowed. Once they reach four stacks of Frozen, they die instantly.
ChillyThe Chilly status activates when the temperature is between -50° C and -20° C.The character loses energy quickly, and their body temperature decreases gradually.
CozyThe Cozy status is essential for survival in The Way of the Winter scenario. You achieve Cozy status when the temperature is between 20° C and 30° C.When this status is active, the character’s body temperature gradually returns to normal.
HeatThe northern region of Nalcott is characterized by volcanoes and snowy tundra. When you venture into the hotter areas and approach heat-inducing resources or enemies, you’ll enter the Heat status if the temperature is between 30° C and 60° C.The character quickly loses hydration, and their body temperature gradually increases.
BlazeThe Blaze status takes effect when the temperature exceeds 60° C.The character rapidly loses hydration, and their body temperature rises sharply. They receive a stack of Combustion every three seconds, causing them to lose 5% HP per second and reducing gear durability by 1%. Once they reach four stacks of Combustion, they die instantly.

How to Stay Warm in Once Human The Way of Winter

Following are the ways to survive the cold in Once Human: The Way of Winter:

  • Set up your camp to prevent severe hypothermia and avoid freezing to death. You’ll discover a new Temperature Control Memetic Tree in the Building tab of the Memetics screen.
  • Use temperature control building items at your base. Unlock various Temperature Control Memetics and use structures like the ‘Campfire’ from the ‘Function Facility’ tab to help you survive the cold. Placing a Campfire raises the temperature by a certain degree, depending on the fuel you use, and it has an effective range of 5 meters.
  • Carry a torch; crafting and holding a torch raises the temperature by +5° C.
  • Utilize the new Leatherworking Memetic to craft cold-resistant armor. The Way of the Winter introduces a new element to armor crafting in Once Human. You can unlock the ‘Leatherworking’ Memetic in the ‘Crafting’ section of the Memetic screen. Visit the Gear Workbench and experiment with different hides to add cold resistance to your armor. Keep in mind that cold and heat resistance buffs only apply to jackets and pants-type armor.
  • Eat food items or raw ingredients that provide cold resistance. Consuming cold-resistant food items or raw ingredients can help boost your cold resistance. There are many new temperature-control food items and cooking-related Memetics available for you to unlock and use. Some raw ingredients like Sunny Ginger, Spikemato, and  Polar Pepper will help increase your cold resistance by 5.
  • Unlock the Polar Expedition Memetic to craft and use Heatium or Thermoium items. You can find and unlock the Polar Expedition Memetic in the ‘Infrastructure’ section of the Memetics screen. Once unlocked, head to a Supplies Workbench to craft Thermoium or Heatium, which will help you survive the cold.

How to Stay Cool in Once Human The Way of Winter

Just like with surviving the cold, you can use these methods to cope with hot temperatures in Once Human:

  • Set up your camp to prevent severe heatstroke and keep yourself safe.
  • Utilize temperature control building items at your base.
  • Unlock the Polar Expedition Memetic to craft and use Coldium or Thermoium items.
  • Eat heat-resistant food items or raw ingredients to boost your heat resistance. For example, Mint increases your heat resistance by +5, and Ice Melon does the same.
  • Use the new Leatherworking Memetic to create armor that provides heat resistance.
