The Abandoned Prison is one of the creepier dungeons you’ll explore in Path of Exile 2, tied to the Goddess of Justice. Like many areas in the game, it hides optional secrets, including a locked Chapel Door. To open it, you’ll need to find and use the Chapel Key hidden within the prison itself.
Finding the Chapel Key

As you explore in the Abandoned Prison, you will eventually end up with a Chapel Key. The name already gives you a clue: it is designed to open the Chapel Door somewhere inside the same dungeon. Unlike set quest items, where the key’s location is fixed, its location can differ slightly depending on the prison layout because the environment is procedurally generated — one of the key features of Path of Exile.
Your best bet is to simply clear out every wing of the prison, checking side rooms and dead ends. It’s easy to miss it if you’re pushing, so be on the lookout for dropped items and interactible objects.
Opening the Chapel Door

When you have the Chapel Key in your inventory:
- Continue to search until you reach the Chapel Door. Since map appearances vary, the door won’t always be in the same place. Look for distinctive architecture — the chapel will probably be distinguishable by stained windows, carved stone, or a door that is larger than normal.
- Stand in front of the door and click to activate. The key will automatically be used up.
- The door will open, and you’ll gain access to the chapel.
- Inside might be another thing, but there’ll usually be bonus loot, lore, or progress pertaining to the Goddess of Justice quest.
Tips When Exploring through the Abandoned Prison
- Clear mobs carefully – mobs here can mob, and easily get stuck while looking for the door.
- Loot filter – with so many drops, filtering will allow you to find key items faster and not miss the Chapel Key.
- Expect to have to backtrack – as both the key and the door are dispersed throughout the prison’s wings, you will be forced to loop back through areas that you’ve already cleared.
It’s not difficult to open the Chapel Door, but it’s a nice example of how Path of Exile 2 marries random map generation with exploratory optional rewards. Once you’ve opened it, you can move on assured you’ve left nothing in the Goddess of Justice’s prison.
