Fix 1: Set Expectation on Antivirus and Windows

If you belong to the select group that still relies on Windows Defender or the Virus and Threat Protection in Windows 10 to ward off malicious people you need to set an exception on the app. If you use a third-party antivirus, you will have to do the same for the software. This is the first fix you should try as more often than not, the antivirus has barred some functions of the game which is leading to the Diablo 3 error code 1016. Here are the steps you need to follow depending on the software you use.
Set Exclusion on Virus and Threat Protection
The Windows Virus & threat protection might suspect the game as malware or malicious program preventing it from starting normally. By setting an exclusion you can resolve the Diablo 3 error. Here are the steps:
- Press Windows Key + I and select Update & Security.
- Click on Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.

Fix 2: Run the Game in Windows 7 Compatibility Mode
Diablo 3 was initially released for Windows 7 environment, so if you are running it on Windows 8 or 10, that might be the problem. Fix 4: Use These Commands to Release and Renew IP

Fix 5: Reinstall Diablo 3
If everything has failed to eliminate the error, uninstalling and reinstalling the game should fix the error. You can uninstall the game from the Battle.net desktop application. Once you have uninstalled the game, restart the computer and install a fresh copy of the game. Now try playing the game and the error should have gone.
