Destiny 2 – The Invitation Mission Walkthrough

The Edge of Fate expansion adds much-needed non-linear campaign gameplay to Destiny 2, with the adventure beginning in a narrative-rich mission called The Invitation. The mission introduces players to Kepler and opens up the main Matterspark hub. 

Players will meet new enemies, figure out movement-based puzzles, and learn about the means of using the unique Matterspark mechanic here. This walkthrough has a complete step-by-step analysis of the mission’s key encounters and challenges.

How to Start The Edge of Fate Campaign

To begin The Edge of Fate campaign, players must first purchase the expansion. Upon purchase, navigate to the Portal screen and select The Edge of Fate from the lower-right tab. From this menu, select Normal or Legendary difficulty to begin. Regardless of difficulty level, all players will be transported directly to The Invitation mission.

Unlocking Matterspark

The mission starts on a fairly linear path where there are aplenty of Fallen enemies. A new type of enemy is seen—flying Coursers. Players will need to clear the area and then meet Ikora Rey, opening up the subsequent part of the mission. Proceed towards talking to a wall terminal, which gets interrupted by VII of the Nine. A previously locked door will open up, and a stairway will lead players to Fuse with Dark Matter and acquire Matterspark.

If you trigger it, Matterspark transforms your Guardian into a ball of powered-up energy with more speed and jump ability for 45 seconds. During this time, you must use the stance to navigate through small tunnels as well as energize machines. Head downstairs to the right and into a narrow vent shaft. At the tunnel’s entrance, shock the power node by rapid button mashing on melee/fire. With the exit now unsealed, switch back to your normal form and put a Rally Banner to get ready for the first large battle.

Defeating the Exile Overseer

Through the doorway lies a large Servitor known as the Exile Overseer. The first phase is simple—hit the boss until the first half of its health bar is depleted. Afterward, the Overseer develops a shield that must be disabled by completing two Matterspark puzzles.

Matterspark is accessible from a station near the previous unlocked door of Nine. Grab the form and move to the blue pipe below the nearby building. Zap the initial pylon inside the pipe, and then return to retrieve Matterspark again and locate a second tunnel near the rocky wall below the buy spot. After zapping the second pylon, the shield of the Overseer drops. Destroy it, and use Matterspark once more to shock a third pylon near the reward chest and clear the path ahead of you.

Dealing with the Crystalline Captain and Pylon Puzzle

The next tier features a fight against the Crystalline Captain, a fairly difficult foe with single health bar. Defeat it, and players must charge three pylons located throughout the arena. Start by grabbing Matterspark near the closed wall, then hop through a series of ramps and platforms to find each of the three pylons.

The first is right in front of you, up a ramp close by. The second is in the middle of the room, over next to a rocky trail. The third is at the back of the room, behind a bunch of metal grates. Slay them all after all pylons are charged to destroy the Resilient Heavy Shank that leads to the conclusion of the battle. Drop down into the middle shaft to collect your loot, then grab another Matterspark charge from a close-by alcove and out through the vent tunnel.

Final Encounter: Vessel of the Archon

The final part of the mission takes place in a gigantic arena where you fight several copies of the Vessel of the Archon. They’re frightening to look at, but the bosses are fairly easy. Each Vessel has a shimmering purple bubble protecting it, which the players have to step inside to attack. Defeat the first Vessel and then locate and destroy the other two in the same way.

After all three Vessels have been destroyed, a final rewards chest and the Unusual Vessel item will appear. Interact with the middle altar to initiate a final cutscene.

Ending the Mission and Moving Forward

After the cinematic ends, follow the path ahead to reach Caldera, where you’ll meet Lodi and witness another cutscene that officially concludes The Invitation mission. With Matterspark now unlocked and your first encounters with the Nine complete, players can explore Caldera and begin the next steps in the Edge of Fate campaign.
