When Guardians enter Kepler in Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, they will often come across mysterious Locked Chests known as Aionian Chests. They are dispersed all over the destination and are a gratifying aspect of Kepler’s many secrets. Players trying to interact with them in the early stages of the campaign will be greeted by messages like, “You don’t have the technology to open this,” warning them that some prerequisite must be met before they can be opened.

Here’s a full guide to understanding and opening these chests, the types of skill you’ll need, and the type of loot you can expect.

Unlocking Chest Tech Through Campaign Progression

The way to open Aionian Chests is to progress through the Edge of Fate campaign. As you assist Lodi and Ikora Rey in driving the House of Exiles and their Archon away, you will gradually unlock the technology equipment needed in order to open these chests.

The first of these is with the Rosetta Aionian Tech, reward of a campaign that allows you to break and open Tier 1 Aionian Chests using the Rosetta Cypher. These are likely to appear towards the start of your journeys but will be inaccessible until you need them, at the corresponding point in the story.

Advanced Chest Types and Puzzle Requirements

As you progress through the campaign, you will encounter more challenging versions of Aionian Chests. They will either include Matterspark, an speed movement ability which also allows you to overcharge Field Generators associated with puzzle mechanics, or you will need to get to the end of thin tunnels or trigger pylons within time limits as a shield drops from the chest.

There are also other chests that are connected to the Relocator, an ability through which you can travel between connected nodes. Some locked chests are unlocked by walking up to them while this ability is active. More involved puzzles—are referred to as Relocator II puzzles—where you must teleport between a number of nodes in a sequence in order to shut down shield generators protecting the chest.

Lastly, the players will be rewarded with the final Kepler traversal tool: Mattermorph. This Strand-based ability changes environmental formations like goo that has accumulated over it and parts of platform. Using Mattermorph, the players can access otherwise locked chests that are hidden inside this weird growth or behind terrain that can be transformed. These are typically the best concealed and most rewarding of the Kepler chests.

Loot and Weapon Rewards

Unlocking these chests is not so much about the difficulty—those are also a main source of Kepler Destination Weapons. Those can be further maximized by attuning them on the Altar of Relativity, within the Aionian base in Caldera. This system allows players to select preferred rewards, which have customized perks rather than randomly rolled stats. While not god rolls in the classical sense, those customized ones will be better than overall world drops and are a good idea to aim for with builds.

Some highly specialized rewards available from Aionian Chests are:

  • Agape – a Heavy-Burst Hand Cannon of high power
  • Giver’s Blessing – an Auto Rifle of high firing and stable
  • Precipial – a Precision Frame Void Shotgun for PvE
  • Ulterior Observation – an Aggressive Frame Machine Gun
  • Last Thursday – an Adaptive Frame Strand Burst Rifle
