Commencement is Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate’s fourth campaign quest, a short mission with brief objectives and a boss fight featuring a unique Matterspark mechanic. Although short, there are some clever environmental challenges and multi-level Vex combat.

Enter the Laboratory

Start at the terminal on campus Aionian. Make your way to the laboratory with the waypoint, hearing Orin and Lodi discuss the Nine.

Your path will be blocked by a locked door. To open it:

  • Destroy the generator beside the door.
  • Use the control panel to input an Aionian command to open it.

Walk down a dark hallway. At the far end is a locked chest which you can open using your Rosetta upgrade (you get this during the Fallow mission), and which contains equipment that should boost your Power level.

Proceed through Laser Grids and Vent Puzzle

In the second room, you’ll encounter laser grids. Those inflict light damage, so simply work your way through them slowly, pausing to let your shields recharge before moving further up. On top, take out one Vex and move along the corridor.

When you’re stuck, look for a tall vent directly underneath a red light. Use the Charge ability to break it open, enter inside, and turn on Matterspark. Roll into the tunnel in front of the vent through your ball shape.

Vex Arena and Cyclops Fight

You’ll arrive in an arena with standard Vex enemies and a Cyclops. Focus on destroying the Cyclops by aiming for its glowing core, while dodging smaller Vex and flying Imp Swarms. Afterward, move into the next tunnel and use Matterspark to access another area.

  • Disable Generators and Defeat a Hydra
  • Now outdoors, you’ll face more Vex in a battleground. To proceed:
  • Destroy two shielded generators guarded by Vex.
  • Issue an Aionian command to open the next door.

A Vex Pylon barrier is inside, sealing another door. Use Matterspark to zap the pylon and reduce the shield. Enter the next chamber where a Hydra miniboss awaits.

Take it down like usual—don’t forget the room is pressurized until you take out more shielded Vex generators, protected by suspended cubes. Take out the cubes and trace their lasers to the generators. Take out the Hydra and get your chest reward.

Proceed, use another Aionian command to open the next door, and move down a corridor with a chest which cannot be opened as of now (you will need upgrades later). Jump onto a platform and continue along it to the Ritual Site.

Destroy the Oracle

This area returns electrified water, so don’t linger here for long. Vex squads will spawn and the Oracle is protected. Charge up all the Vex Pylons present in the arena using Matterspark, which disables the shield of the Oracle. Kill the Oracle to cleanse the zone next.

Take a minute to reload and prepare your loadout, as the mission climax is around the corner.

Boss Fight: Phydron, Gate Lord

Last boss is Phydron, a massive Gate Lord—a Minotaur with bulked-up muscles. Attack the glowing white weak spot in its stomach. Linear Fusion Rifles, Sniper Rifles, or Machine Guns here.

This is a three-phased battle:

  • Phase 1: Fight until a third of Phydron’s health has dropped.
  • Phase 2: Invulnerability of the boss. Bomb proximal Vex Pylons with Matterspark, then execute the shielded Oracle to render him once again vulnerable.
  • Phase 3: Repeat the same when the boss attacks the third part of its health bar.

Throughout the fight, waves of Vex will appear. Overwhelmed, take a moment to dispose of them before going back at the Gate Lord. A reward chest will materialize once Phydron is eliminated.

A conversation between Ikora and Lodi concludes the mission and further explains the narrative. Once you are done discussing with them, you can continue on to the next campaign mission or go to Kepler in order to check out side content and equipment development.
