Though simple at first glance, roads in Anno 117: Pax Romana play a huge role in keeping your city running. Below, find the complete guide on how to unlock better road types, how upgrades work, and how to produce the materials you need for each tier.

How to Upgrade Roads in Anno 117: Pax Romana

Upgrading the roads is not available immediately. First, you have to research new road types, then produce the materials needed.

Paved Roads

Paved Roads are the first upgrade you can unlock. Here’s how to get them:

  • Keep in your warehouse a minimum of 50 Concrete.
  • Open the Economic research tree and unlock the Paved Roads discovery.

Paved Roads improve transport speed and increase building reach; as such, your city will be efficient almost immediately.

Marble Roads

Next up is the premium upgrade: Marble Roads.

To unlock them:

  • Store at least marbles.
  • Go to the Civic research tree and research the Marble Roads discovery.

Just like Paved Roads, Marble Roads improve transport speed and building reach, but they also provide a small bump in Prestige, helping your city feel more refined.

Applying Road Upgrades

Once you’ve researched it, just build the new road type over your old roads. You won’t lose anything for upgrading; the game refunds your materials if you replace a lower-tier road later. So, feel free to upgrade as your economy grows.

How to Make Concrete for Paved Roads

Once you unlock the Eques population tier, you can start concrete production. After that, you can set up your supply chain:

  • Create a Limestone Quarry on a mountainside.
  • Build Sand Collectors on coastal slots.
  • Construct a Concrete Mixer that can mix Limestone and Sand together.

A reliable setup is:

BuildingQuantity
Limestone Quarry1
Sand Refinery2
Concrete Mixer3

The Limestone Quarry and Sand Refineries require Plebeian workers, whereas the Concrete Mixers rely on youEquites, so make sure your population can support both.

How to Make Marble for Marble Roads

Marble comes a little later in your progression, once your Eques population is strong enough to unlock it.

To begin production of Marble:

  • Find an island with Marble fertility and construct a Marble Quarry.
  • Build a Marble Mason to turn Uncut Marble into usable Marble.

Like Concrete production, the quarry is handled by Plebeians while the processing building needs Equites.
