One of the most powerful defensive techniques in Gothic 1 Remake is parrying. It allows players to block incoming attacks while opening up opportunities to counterattack. In this guide, we will cover how to unlock parrying, execute perfect parries, utilize the Riposte ability, and develop the timing necessary for parrying both humans and creatures.
How to Unlock Parrying
Parrying is one of the combat techniques in Gothic 1 Remake that allows you to block at just the right time, temporarily staggering your enemy. Once you have reached Master level in the fight training skill, you can finish off a successful parry by doing a Riposte kick.
In order to execute a Parry you must first obtain learning One-Handed Combat from one of the trainers:
- Scatty in the Old Camp
- Cord in the New Camp
- Gor Na Toth in the Swamp Camp
To unlock the Riposte, train your One-Handed Combat to the Master level.
For Two-Handed Combat, continue progressing through the main story until Chapter 3, then train with Thorus to unlock two-handed parrying.
Parry Controls
The controls depend on your platform:
- PC: Press the CTRL (block) key.
- PlayStation 5: Press the Right Trigger (R2).
- Xbox: Press the Right Trigger (RT).
How to Perform a Perfect Parry

If you want to successfully do a parry you’ll want to time your press of the block button properly. You’ll need to do so at the exact moment that the enemy attacks you. The timing of the parrying window is very small so it’s important to be accurate with your timing.
When fighting against other players make sure to pay attention to when the player swings their weapon instead of their health bar or their other movement types. Make sure that you hit the block button directly before the attack lands on you.
If you have done this correctly then you will see orange sparks and the other player will be set off balance for a few seconds.
How to Use Riposte
You will be able to do a Riposte after successfully performing a Perfect Parry once you hit Master training. Once you have done the perfect parry, immediately use the Attack button to kick your opponent. This will give you the opportunity to exploit the opening created when the enemy staggers.
Parrying Creatures

Blocking or counter-attacking against hostile creatures in general is done with a unique technique. Unlike weapon attacks, creatures can use lunges, bites, and charges as types of attacks.
The proper timing for counter-attacks is to wait until the attack from the creature, and then use the block button just before the hit. The correct timing may take some practice as different types of creatures use different attack methods but you’ll get there.
Tips for Successful Parries
Expect to practice a lot because the timing window for perfect parries is quite short. Look for the orange sparks that show you are blocking at the right time. After mastering your training you’ll want to perform a follow-up Riposte kick too.
When fighting multiple enemies, improve your chances of making a parry by rolling out of range and finding another chance to perform a parry in addition to using dodge rolls.
