Wood is one of the earliest and most important resources in Anno 117: Pax Romana. From your first Woodcutter hut to your expanding neighborhoods and production chains, everything starts with Timber. But it doesn’t take long before new governors notice a problem: the trees around their Woodcutters start thinning out, production drops, and efficiency tanks.

This guide takes you through every available method for restoring or planting new trees, with a few tips thrown in on how to maintain the health of your forest.

How Tree Regrowth Works

Facilities such as the woodcutter and charcoal burner rely on surrounding forest tiles to continue efficiently producing goods. If, perchance, a little too many trees were cut down or one expanded just a mite too ambitiously, never fear. Forest tiles in Anno 117 will regenerate over time.

Ways Lost Trees Can Be Regained

  • Remove a building that was placed on a forest tile
  • Trees will start growing back right after the building is gone.
  • Move the building to a different location
  • This liberates the original area of forest, as the trees can return.
  • Use research to enable automatic replanting – details below.

You don’t need perfect coverage for good output. About 90 percent efficiency is still workable in most settlements.

Understanding Forestry Building Areas

When you place a building relying on trees, you’ll see its AoE. Any forest in that circle counts toward its productivity.

To avoid accidentally building over your forest:

  • Put roads around the AoE as a border
  • This helps keep construction away from important tree zones.
  • Remember to double-check before placing new structures; forests are easy to overwrite.

And if you do happen to lose something, well-just remove the building and the forest will grow back.

Research that enables tree planting

Multiple enhancements within the Research system allow forestry buildings to plant trees by themselves. Those are the most important:

ResearchEffect
Regeneration of WoodlandsWoodcutters can plant trees.
ReplantingCharcoal Burners can plant trees.
Untapped SoilResin Tappers can plant trees.

The upgrades will, after being unlocked, have buildings slowly cover nearby open land with fresh forest.

A Useful Trick: Plant, Then Replace

After trees have been planted by one building, you can:

  • Demolish the building
  • Replace it with another forestry building, which benefits from the new forest tiles.

For example, after researching Untapped Soil you can place a Resin Tapper on grassland. It will fill the area with new trees, which remain even if you remove the Tapper. Then you can drop a Woodcutter or Charcoal Burner there to take advantage of the freshly grown forest.
