To begin trading, you will need to unlock the ability to do so. This is possible through getting past the first part of the tutorial in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, which will unlock the feature of multiplayer mode. Once you have gotten through the tutorial and made your way to the first Pokemon Center, you will be able to trade with other players.
You can trade with your friends or random players that you find in the game. There are two methods of trading that you should be aware of in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, and they are called Link Trade and Surprise Trade.
Link Trade
You will be setting a Link Code which needs to match with another player to trade with them. More than one person can join in with the code, so this option is great for groups of tight-knit friends who are playing together.
Surprise Trade
In this method of trading, you will need to pick one Pokémon to trade and you will get another at random. This works well with strangers, as it will just be a one-time transaction. If you have a Pokemon that you don’t really want, you can trade it and wait for an offer. After the offer is made, you can check what Pokemon you have received.
