Butter is a rare item with a 2% drop chance when you kill a Butterfly in Don’t Starve. This makes it quite hard to get, as Butterflies only spawn at a certain time in certain biomes. The Butterfly is a passive mob that spawns from flowers in Grassland biomes during the daytime—and at dusk it will return to a flower to despawn. As they are a passive mob, it can be hard to kill them—they are innocent creatures, and they also avoid players by running away in a zigzag motion. They are the only chance to get Butter in the game, so this guide will take you through the process of hunting Butterflies to obtain Butter.
How to Farm Butter in Don’t Starve
Butter is useful for various reasons and spoils in 40 days, making it one of the longest-lasting food items in the game. It is a dairy food item that can be used in the base game to make Waffles. In the Shipwrecked DLC, Butter can be used to make Lobster Dinner and Warly’s special recipe of Fresh Fruit Crepes.

Butterflies are elusive, and in addition to spawning in the daytime in Grassland biomes, they cannot spawn in Caves or in the winter season. It is recommended to not pick flowers near your base as the Butterflies will spawn here. There are two ways of hunting butterflies.
Hunting in the Wild
Take the Butterfly head-on by noticing its zigzag patterns. When it stops at a flower or at a fixed point hovering above the ground, it’s the perfect time to attack. As it has only 1 HP any weapon will kill it in one hit. If you have a ranged weapon like the Blowdart you don’t have to wait for the butterfly to flutter around—you can kill it instantly. However, this is a rather expensive way to kill them.
Butterfly Farm
Craft a Bug Net and catch butterflies to replant them as flowers. These will spawn more butterflies and you can kill them whenever you wish for a renewable source of butterflies. This is also known as a Butterly farm, and will raise your chances of obtaining Butter.
Once you’ve killed 50 butterflies, there’s a high chance that one of them will have dropped Butter.
