Surprisingly, owls are an important part of gameplay in Horizon Forbidden West if you happen to use a particular weapon. The best bows in the game need a lot of Machine Muscle to run, and you might be running out quickly of them. Machine Muscle is essentially a craft part of ammo that you need to use the bows, so it’s pretty much impossible to shoot without them.
Where to Find Owls in Horizon Forbidden West
You can usually find Machine Muscle in the wild from machines and crates, or purchase them from Hunters that you come across. These Hunters will want to exchange items with you for the Machine Muscle, and they always require the Owl Wishbone which can be dropped only by owls in the game. Thus, you will need to look for owls if you want to make more arrows for your bows.

Owls are not particularly easy to find, but they will be once you know where to look. They can be spotted over the paths in the mountainous regions and on the slopes over the map. Here are some of their haunts:
- Northwest of The Base, near a mountain path.
- West of The Bulwark, near a mountain path.
- Halfway between Relic Ruins: The Long Coast and Tallneck: The Stand of the Sentinels, on the mountain slopes.
As owls are solitary creatures, you will find only one owl at a time, which makes for slow farming. The drop rate for an Owl Wishbone is low, and you will need to be careful when you approach an owl as they are flighty birds, running away at the slimmest glimpse of danger.
Your best option is to use a bow to shoot them down, which makes the entire transaction come full circle—spending arrows to get more and better arrows.
