The popular PlayStation game series The Last Of Us is now turned into a TV show released on HBO, and while the show seems to stay true to the game, we cannot judge based on one episode alone. The first episode gives us a glimpse into the lives of Joel and Ellie and other popular characters as they brave the infected lands. Sometime within the first episode, it is revealed that Ellie is immune to the Cordyceps virus, which would otherwise claim human lives within a day. But the reason for her immunity is unknown, so here we will see how she can gain immunity in The Last Of Us.
Just like in the game series of the same title, Ellie is shown to be immune to the Cordyceps virus after getting bitten for the first time. The show introduces Ellie to Joel and Tess after a wounded Firefly leader, Marlene, leaves her in their care, with hopes that they would take Ellie to the city.
Along the way, the trio encounters a FEDRA guard who was stationed to scan traveling humans for infection. Knowing that she will test positive, Ellie then stabs the guard, which prompts Joel to protect her. In the process, Tess grabs the testing tool and checks Ellie, and the result comes back positive. But when Ellie reveals the bite mark, which has healed considerably, Tess and Joel were taken aback. It also gave them a better idea of why the Fireflies wanted to protect her and take her to the city ASAP.
There are a few reasons why Ellie could be immune to the virus. The first instance that fans speculate is surrounding the circumstances of her birth. Ellie’s mother, Anna, died shortly after she was born, and it was rumored that Anna was bitten by an infected while Ellie was still in her. But even so, Ellie was already a full-term baby, which won’t give her enough time to generate her antibodies.
Another reason why Ellie is possibly immune could be that she was born with the mutant gene to protect her from the virus. The Cordyceps virus has been around for a couple of years by the time Ellie was born, so most probably the newer generation of humans has a certain resistance to the virus. But so far there is no evidence or indication of why Ellie is immune in the show, so fans can only hope it will be revealed in the later episodes.
